Aunty Mary`s Academy offers a good, quality education from Baby Class up to Grade Seven. We provide an environment where every child can learn, grow and build a strong foundation for the future.

On 9th January 2020, we moved to our own school place, a milestone that strengthened our sense of identity and community. Today there are two classroom buildings – one with three classrooms and one with four classrooms - for 150 pupils and eight teachers. We have a good enrollment. Each class has a manageable number of pupils, ensuring that the teacher-pupil ratio is appropriate and making it easy for teachers to interact with all pupils in the class. It is special because we have 100 % passing rate.

We also teach our pupils other skills such as capenterly, bricklaying and gardening and piggery. It is very important that children learn these skills so that they can survive even if they do not finish school.

School year and daily schedule

The school year starts in the first week of January and ends in the first week of December. Lessons take place from Monday to Friday and run from 08:00 to 12:30, followed by a lunch break from 12:30 to 13:30. Every child wears a school uniform and receives lunch at school. Afternoon lessons continue from 13:35 until 15:00. Our school bus transport pupils from different areas to school and back home.
Our monthly school fee is $30 (K770). The school does not receive funds from the government.
Currently we are teaching 11 children who are orphans and have no one to pay their school fees. We could not allow these children to leave Aunty Mary`s Academy because of the death of their fathers or mothers. We decided to be with them until they write their grades seven exam to give them hope and the chance of a better future.

Subjects

Teaching is mainly done in English, helping pupils build strong communication skills for their future. During Zambian language lessons, Cinyanja is taught to keep pride in local culture and heritage.
We teach: mathematics, English, integrated science, home economics, expresive art, creative and technology study, literacy in English and in Cinyanja. Since this year, we have also been able to teach information technology (IT) in a separate computer room equipped with laptops.

Career days and projects

Every year we organise career days, for example with visits to the hospital or Mfuwe International Airport, inspiring pupils to think about their future professions and explore different career paths. On International Children's Broadcasting Day, pupils took part in a programme on the local radio station. Additional projects include farming and piggery and we are also planning chicken layering.

Aunty Mary`s Academy Foundation

Aunty Mary’s Academy Foundation is a non-governmental, non-partisan and non-profit-making organization that was established in 2025 to offer education from pre-school to grade 7 to pupils in Mambwe District. The academy works closely with the Ministry of Education DEBS office which has provided guidance on the operations. We endeavor to expand our collaboration with other stakeholders for improved service delivery.

Who we are

Mary Lungu

As a professional teacher, I started 2016 teaching in the house our two sons, Darlington and Geoffrey Jr. Two other children from our neighborhood joined them. These parents were telling other people about it, and by January 2017, the number increase from 4 to 12 children.

Fortunately, we found a building by 2 classroom block, which we rented. The number of children kept on increasing, we had to employ another teacher to help me.

My vision: a special unit so that we can be teaching the deaf as well. We don't have such a school nearby, we only have one government school in the province and it's far from here.

Geoffrey Lungu

Born in Mfuwe, I spent every spare moment of my schooling learning to become a safari guide. In 2010, I passed the guide exams. Later, I acquired the additional qualifications required to lead walking safaris in Zambia.

With Aunty Mary's Academy, we are fulfilling our dream. I have always wanted to impact society in my little ways and now I can make that happen.
